EXTERNAL SCHOLARSHIPS AND FUNDING
CANADA GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP - DOCTORAL PROGRAM (CGS-D)
The CGS D program supports high-caliber students engaged in doctoral programs in all academic disciplines. This support allows scholars to fully concentrate on their doctoral studies, to seek out the best research emntions in their chosen fields and contribute to the Canadian research evosystem during and beyond the tenure of their awards.
CIHR Health Research Training Award Programs. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) strives to ensure a strong foundation of future health research leaders, and is committed to offering programs that increase the supply of highly-qualified research personnel.
NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships - Doctoral Program. The NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships – Doctoral (PGS D) program provides financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in an eligible doctoral program in the natural sciences or engineering.
SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships. The SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships support high-calibre students engaged in doctoral programs in the social sciences and humanities.
CANADA GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP - MASTER'S PROGRAM (CGS-M)
The CGS M program provides financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in eligible master’s or, in some cases, doctoral programs in Canada (refer to Eligibility). This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies in their chosen fields.
The CGS M program supports up to 3,000 students annually in all disciplines and is administered jointly by Canada’s three federal agencies: CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC. The selection process and post-award administration are carried out at the institutional level, under the
guidance of the three agencies. Students submit their application to the institution at which they intend to hold their award using the Research Portal.
The Canada Graduate Scholarships-Master's (CGS M) Program provides financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in eligible master's programs in Canada. This program supports up to 2,500 students annually in all disciplines as is administered jointly by Canada's three federal granting agencies: Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The scholarship value is $17,500 for 12 months. Students must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
CANADA GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP - MICHAEL SMITH FOREIGN STUDY SUPPLEMENTS PROGRAM (CGS-MSFSS)
The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements Program is available to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who hold a Joseph-Armand Bombardier, an Alexander Graham Bell, or a Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) at the master’s or doctoral level, or a Vanier CGS at the doctoral level.
CANADIAN EDUCATION & RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR COUNSELLING (CERIC)
CERIC is a national charitable organization that advances education and research in career counselling and encourages the engagement of Canada’s full-time graduate students whose academic focus is in career development and/or related fields through the Graduate Student Engagement Program (GSEP). GSEP students can compete for the GSEP Award, which includes $1,000.

MINDS Scholarship Initiative for Indigenous Students
The Mobilizing Insights in Defence and Security (MINDS) program of the Department of National Defence (DND) is committed to fostering the next generation of security and defence scholars in the Canadian academic community and to encouraging a strong Canadian knowledge base in contemporary defence and security issues. To this end, the MINDS program has partnered with SSHRC to deliver the MINDS Scholarship Initiative.

SOROPTIMIST FOUNDATION OF CANADA
Grants for Canadian Women Graduate Students. Applications due January 31.
The Soroptimist Foundation of Canada annually offers several $7,500 grants to female graduate students in Canada to assist them with university studies which will qualify them for careers which will improve the quality of women's lives. Examples include but are not limited to: providing services, providing legal counselling and assistance, counselling mature women entering or re-entering the labour market, counselling women in crisis, counselling and training women for non-traditional employment, and positions in women's centres.

Research Training Awards
Research Training Awards are designed to foster the development of occupational health and safety research expertise in B.C. We support the training of new researchers today who will be able to help answer the critical research questions of tomorrow.
Research Training Awards are available to highly-qualified graduate students at the master’s and doctoral level. To qualify, applicants need to be engaged in a full-time graduate studies program with a B.C. university. International students are welcome to apply. These awards enable students to undertake research training with a focus on workplace health and safety.
